Teen killed in crash near Knightdale

KNIGHTDALE, NC (WTVD) -- An 18-year-old man was killed in a crash on US Highway 64 near Knightdale early Thursday.

It happened in the eastbound lanes just before 2:30 a.m. Authorities later identified the victim as Brandon James Japhet, 18, of Wendell.

Drivers were detoured onto I-540 and then US-64 Business while investigators worked to learn what happened.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Japhet was headed east and hit the back of a wrecker truck parked on the shoulder. Japhet died at the scene.

The driver of the wrecker was not hurt.
