NC State practice
The Wolfpack opens practice and transfer Ryan Finley is one of three hopefuls vying for the QB spot.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- From practice No. 1 - into the foreseeable future - every pass, every handoff, every line adjustment is being scrutinized.

N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren waits patiently for a quarterback to emerge. For now it's a three-headed race with no frontrunner.

In the mix is Ryan Finley, a transfer from Boise State who's coming off a broken ankle. The grad student followed new offensive coordinator Eli Drinkwitz to Raleigh. A move from the blue turf to greener fields means adjustments for both, including to the humidity of the South.

Doeren isn't waiting to protect Matt Dayes. The running back will wear a yellow jersey in hopes of limiting extreme physical contact. It's expected that Dayes and tight end Jaylen Samuels will see increased workloads this fall.

Whoever plays QB will need the Pack's playmakers to stay healthy.
