NCSU student says she was assaulted, fondled on campus
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- NC State police are investigating a sexual assault of a student near one of it's most notable landmarks: The Memorial Bell Tower.
News of the female students attack spread quickly through campus.
"There's a lot of people thinking about her and hoping that she is OK," said student Esther Lee.
The victim says she was walking toward the Bell Tower after leaving the Mary Yarborough Courtyard when a man grabbed her from behind, shoving his hand in her pants and began fondling private areas of her body.
Police say she managed to break free, but the man took off.
Lee lives across the street from the Bell Tower.
"I can't really imagine what she's going through," said Lee.
Police say it happened Saturday night around 11:15 p.m.
Around 1:15 a.m., student Gunnar Nuxolo says he got a text alert.
"A friend of mine brought it up and we were all just surprised. We were really surprised that it would happen in such a public place."
Police say there is no video of the incident. The attackers description is vague, so police don't know if he is a student or not, and the motive is unclear.
Sunday night investigators are urging students to eliminate distractions like texting or using headphones, and always walk with a group.
Those safety measures are tips students Lara Queck and Ester Lee say they try to do, but admit it is not always convenient.
"I will try to keep in mind always looking around me paying attention-staying where there is people around after what just happened, says Queck. "I definitely hope they can find this guy."
Police say students can always call them if they need a safety escort.
