RALEIGH (WTVD) -- ABC11's Tisha Powell spoke with Gov. Roy Cooper and his wife, first lady Kristen Cooper, on what it's like to be elected and now sworn in as governor of North Carolina.

Gov. Cooper called serving as North Carolina's 75th governor an honor and a privilege. He said he's ready to serve as a governor for everyone, regardless if they voted for him or not.

When asked about challenges he might face, Gov. Cooper brought up partisan politics not only in North Carolina, but across the country. He said that working in the private sector and in the legislature as attorney general has prepared him to work across party lines.

He said he thinks North Carolinians are ready for "leaders who will work together" and will look for common ground.

Gov. Cooper told ABC11 his goals are to have a population that is more educated and healthier. He wants residents to lead a "more purposeful, abundant lives."

"State government has to figure out when to help, and when to stay out of the way," he said. He said he wants the middle class to grow.

When asked about her goals, first lady Cooper said she wants to fight childhood poverty and hunger. She feels equipped to do that due to over 10 years' experience working with foster children.

When asked about the inauguration, the Coopers said they want it open to the public, as well as the execute mansion.

Kristen said she has her gown for the Inauguration Ball. It was designed by a native North Carolinian who her daughter met through work.

The two said they are still working on the menu but have some good ideas in mind.

Throughout the interview, the Coopers talked about how much family means to them and how much they cherish their relationship with each other as well as their daughters.

Gov. Cooper said he asked each member of his family before he started his run for governor.
