It happened just before 10 a.m. along Maude Stewart Road, near Tram Road in the Willow Spring area.

Several good Samaritans driving down the road pulled over and tried to get her out of the car after it careened into the water.

The woman, Alexis McLeod, was taken to WakeMed. She is in critical condition.

It is also unclear what caused the car to veer off the road and end up mostly submerged, but the Highway Patrol said speed appeared to be a factor.
