Former Duke player says Durham police pulled guns on him

DURHAM, NC (WTVD) -- A former Duke basketball player took to Twitter Thursday to express his anger at the way he says he was treated by Durham police officers.

Nolan Smith claims he was pulled over and officers approached his vehicle yelling with guns drawn.

Smith said he has tinted windows, but rolled them down right away to show he was "harmless."

"Soon as they relaxed and asked questions.. They became fans... Chill you not getting a autograph now, you just pulled a gun on me," wrote Smith.

Smith played for Duke from 2007 to 2011 and was a big part of the 2010 national championship team.

ABC11 reached out to the Durham Police Department to ask about the incident. A spokesperson said Smith was stopped for a possible tint violation just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The spokesperson also told ABC11 the Chevrolet Tahoe Smith was driving did not stop for several blocks. When officers approached, one of the officers unholstered his weapon as a safety precaution, the spokesperson said.

The officers said they were unable to see into the back of the vehicle, which was heavily tinted.

Smith was given a warning ticket for a tint violation.

There is no record that Smith has filed an official complaint.
