Coppedge, 23, was hit New Year's eve by Deputy Crystal Mitchell as he crossed Highway 39 near Louisburg.
Sheriff Green says Deputy Mitchell became distracted and looked away from the highway as she was driving. When she looked back she saw Coppedge crossing the road and tried to stop but it was too late.
Troopers investigating the accident have not determined whether or not Deputy Mitchell was speeding.
