Sunday in Morrisville, a Hindu prayer service was held to remember his life.
Duke University officials honored Mahato with kind words as Mahato's friends and family try to cope with the loss of their loved one.
"He left a scar I cannot sleep, I cannot stay in my house because he is all over in my house cause he is sleeping there and I can't forget a single day," Mahato's friend, Rinku Majumder said.
Nineteen year old, Stephen Oates was charged with first degree murder and robbery in Mahato's death.
Durham police say Oates also faces charges of robbery. Investigators believe his crimes stretch back several months.
