A Wilson high school coach is charged with two sex offenses against a minor.

Davis Brandon Earp, 33, was a physical education teacher and the head wrestling coach at Fike High School.

He resigned Saturday after being arrested and charged with one count of felony sexual offense against a student and one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

School officials were first alerted to the possible inappropriate behavior on Jan. 11 when the school's principal, Steve Ellis, intercepted a text message from a student's cell phone.

Wilson County Schools has recommended the state revoke Earp's teaching license.

Before teaching at Fike, Earp was a staff member for the Chowan University football team.

Earp's next court date is scheduled for February 12.
