Several injured after high speed chase

DURHAM

Officers were dispatched at 2:04 a.m. Monday to a disturbance in the parking lot of Rumba 54 at 2223 East NC 54. When officers arrived, they saw several people fighting in the parking lot.

As officers were attempting to break up the fights, a black Chrysler 300 sped from the parking lot, almost striking an officer and turned onto N.C. 54. The Chrysler rammed a car stopped in traffic and then turned on to N.C. 55.

A Durham police officer was stopped at the light at N.C. 55 and N.C. 54 when he heard several gunshots and saw a male inside a black Chrysler 300 firing several shots at vehicles stopped in traffic.

The officer turned around and attempted to stop the Chrysler, but the driver refused to stop and sped north on N.C. 55. The Chrysler ran a red light at Meridian Parkway and struck a gray Cadillac. The Chrysler then turned on to Carpenter Fletcher Road and slid down an embankment on the right side of the road.

The driver of the Chrysler – Rayvon Deshawn Jenkins, 25, of Taylor Street – and the passenger – Ronald Edward Goldsmith Jr., 27, of Concord Street - were placed under arrest.

Goldsmith was charged with discharging a firearm in the city limits, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of marijuana. Jenkins was charged with felony speeding to elude, felony hit-and-run, possession of marijuana, careless and reckless driving, speeding and running a red light.

Officers recovered a handgun and marijuana.

No one was injured in the shooting. The occupants of the Cadillac suffered what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
