Sapokiwski sentenced to another 20 years

HILLSBOROUGH

It's a murder that has devastated his family.

The 2005 double murder shocked the Chapel Hill community. Sapikowski is accused of shooting his parents to death inside their home.

Now, nearly three years after the brutal slaying, 19-year-old Sapikowski is sentenced to at least 20 years in prison for the murder of his mother.

Sapikowski's sister, Lauren, spoke at the sentencing.

"My parents were the most loving people I've ever known," Lauren said. "They were constantly telling us how proud they were. Even in the smallest things we accomplished. And they were the most supportive parents I think imaginable."

It was a similar scene last week when Sapikowski was sentenced to at least 20 years for his father's murder. He will likely serve at least 40 years for his parents' murders.

It's clear they weren't the only victims.

"I know I'll never recover no matter how much time passes," Lauren said. "Every relationship is tainted with this fear that I will lose them. And I'll always go through my life having difficulty trusting people. This loss will stay with me forever."

Investigators say Sapikowski's parents were dead at least two week before they were found. They were both shot multiple times.
