High winds plus extremely dry weather conditions fuel brush fires.

Firefighters doused flames on the side of Interstate 85 in Granville County Sunday afternoon.

Heavy smoke could be seen billowing high in the air near Oxford. While they put out the blaze, crews had to shut down the roadway between exits 206 and 208.

The Forestry Service Chopper was called out to battle a brush fire in Johnston County in the 3300 block of Polenta Road and Matthews Road. No one was hurt.

In Cumberland County, it took units from at least two fire departments to get a fire in the 1200 block of Palestine Road under control.

In Wake County, 15 units were called to respond to a blaze. Authorities say it was sparked by a juvenile playing with matches, but the strong winds helped spread it.
