Downed power lines close Hammond Road

March 12, 2008 6:00:21 AM PDT
Raleigh Police have closed Hammond Road at Rush Street after power lines fell as a result of a traffic accident.

A detour around the area is expected to remain in place during the morning commute as crews work to replace poles and repair other damage.

Commuters are asked to take:

  • Northbound, Hammond Road will be closed Chapanoke Road.
  • Southbound, Hammond Road will be closed just south of the Beltline.
  • Eastbound, Rush Street will be closed at Wilmington.
  • Westbound, Rush Street will be closed as Shelden.

There were no serious injuries in the single-vehicle hit-and-run wreck that started the problems at the intersection, and there were no injuries when a tractor-trailer subsequently became tangled in downed wires.

The original hit-and-run vehicle and its driver were located nearby. The driver is in custody.

The wreck occurred about 2:30 a.m. today. A wreck report will be forwarded later this morning when it is completed.
