The accident happened Saturday night on Highway 701 in Sampson County.

Troopers say 57 year old Lewis Fetterman, Jr. of Clinton, was travelling south on Highway 701, when 47-year-old Alejandro Rivas of Newton Grove crossed the center line and struck his car head-on.

Fetterman was an Assistant Professor at the Campbell University Pharmaceutical Sciences Department, School of Pharmacy.

He and Rivas driver both died.

Fetterman's wife, Joni-Fay Watts Fetterman, was a passenger in the vehicle. She is in stable condition at Sampson Regional Medical Center.

Investigators say the accident was alcohol related.

Troopers also say there was no evidence of speeding and weather was not a factor, even though it was raining at the time.
