Wake County school officials say Kristie Mitchell, 40, embezzled over $20,000 from Leesville Road Middle and Conn Elementary schools while she worked as a clerical worker at the schools.
Investigators say Mitchell, who started working with the schools system in November 2003, embezzled the money between July 2005 and June 2007.
Wake County school system spokesperson Bill Poston says an internal audit led to the investigation. Parents at Leesville Middle school reportedly also questioned why new equipment that was ordered was not received. Poston said the investigation focused on Mitchell after officials noticed financial improprieties at both schools while Mitchell handled funds at those schools.
Mitchell was arrested Thursday morning. She's being held at the Wake County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
