Blood donations critically low

FAYETTEVILLE O negative is the blood type used in traumas when there is no time to type the victim's blood. The Blood Donor Center currently has just one day's worth of the blood type on hand. The center normally has a three- to four-day supply in reserve.

Hope Blanton, Blood Services Director at Cape Fear Valley, says donations are needed immediately because all donations must be processed first before the blood is ready for patient use. Processing normally takes up to two days.

The Blood Donor Center has extended its hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday to help deal with the blood shortage.

Type O donors are particularly needed, but all blood types are welcome. If you would like to make an appointment to donate, please call 609-6300.
