Man who killed child may be illegal

JOHNSTON COUNTY

Marcus Lassiter was struck while he played Sunday afternoon in his /*Johnston County*/ neighborhood on Heath Road near the intersection fo N.C. 96.

Witnesses told troopers a silver Camaro hit the child and the driver fled on foot. .

The 20-year-old driver called himself Pollo Hernandez Rodriguez, but authorities have identified him as Hipolito Zamora Hernandez.

"I'm guessing he's probably illegal," witness Alan Hester said..

Hester helped catch Hernandez after he hit the boy while driving drunk and speeding. The boy was left badly brain damaged, forcing his family to take him off od life support Monday evening.

"I feel for the family, but what can we do?" Hester asked..

The Johnston County D.A. is still reviewing the case and is not sure about upgrading charges against Hernandez, who's still in jail.

Immigration officials say if he's illegal, federal charges would upgraded. They're checking his background.

Hernandez is charged with DWI, possession of a stolen car, hit and run, assault, reckless driving, speeding and driving without a license.
