Fayetteville Narcotic Detectives charged 76-year-old Mark C. Pomerans with five counts of prescribing a controlled substance without a legitimate purpose.

Pomerans is accused of writing prescriptions for oxycodone and xanax for a fee. Due to ongoing health issues, he was not charged until Tuesday.

He was released on a $12,500.00 secured bond. His first court appearance is April 16.

Pomerans' office manager, Cindy T. Monsour, 52, has an outstanding warrant for felony conspiracy related to the sell of illegal prescriptions.

Detectives began a joint undercover investigation with the State Bureau of Investigation in 2005. Special agents conducted undercover purchases from the doctor throughout 2006. Pomerans retired from his practice in June 2007.

Anyone with information regarding the illegal prescribing of controlled substances may contact Crime Stoppers at (910) 483-8477 or the FPD Narcotic/Vice Unit at (910) 433-1553.
