Student charged for bringing weapon to school

Cumberland County Sheriff's Deputies have charged a Gray's Creek High School student, who is also a suspected gang member, with bringing a weapon on to campus.

17-year old Darnell Handley, Jr. was arrested shortly before 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Investigators say school officials received a tip about the weapon and alerted the school's resource officers.

Deputies and an explosives sniffing K-9 combed the student parking lot looking for the weapon and found a handgun lying under the front passenger seat of a black Acura.

The vehicle was traced to Handley who is a member of the GMC (an acronym for "Get Money Click"); a non-traditional gang set which originated in Fayetteville.

Handley is charged with possession of a gun on educational property. He taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center and placed under a two thousand dollar secured bond.
