Eyewitness News has learned the Durham Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after receiving a complaint about an officer cheating on their promotion exam.

"We're conducting an internal investigation," Police Chief Jose Lopez told Eyewitness News. "If the allegations are sustained they will definitely result in discipline up to and including possibly termination."

A department spokesperson said it was an isolated incident that's been under review for several months. The officer took the test late last year, but was not promoted.

Chief Lopez said it was unclear whether the officers under review had obtained a copy of the test in advance or if they were helped in another way.

Lopez emphasized that he'll wait to take action until the investigation is complete.
