Local teen to accept award from President Bush

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C.

Nicholas Marriam, 15, will receive the /*President's Volunteer Service Award*/ Friday.

The Johnston County teen is a cancer survivor who started a non-profit organization to bring smiles to the faces of children suffering from various illnesses.

Marriam says he put his hospital experience to good use to provide support and toys to children, keeping them occupied while they go through chemotherapy.

The /*Nickleby Project*/, also named for Marriam's cousin, Shelby, helps children in N.C., Maryland and Washington, D.C.

In addition to donating at area hospitals, the project also gives gift baskets out at the Ronald McDonald House. The Nickleby Project also sponsors an annual golf tournament in which they hope to raise enough funds to sponsor a college scholarship in the future.

Eyewitness News will be present Friday as President Bush makes his stop in Raleigh to congratulate Marriam.
