Mother charged with abusing 3-year-old son

Cumberland County Sheriff's detectives have charged a Fayetteville woman with physically abusing her three-year-old son.Rhiana Lingham, 22, allegedly beat her child while trying to potty train him. Investigators say numerous marks were found along the child's torso, legs and groin.

The child was also born with a heart defect which required corrective surgery. He remains under the care of a cardiologist.

Lingham was originally charged with misdemeanor child abuse. However, due to the numerous marks observed, and the fact that the victim was struck in his groin causing extreme pain, charged have been upgraded to child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

Lingham remains in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
