A four-year-old Clayton boy has died after drowing in a fountain in Clayton home subdivision.

Clayton Police responded to where a 4-year-old Derek Casanova-Gonzalez was found Sunday near Charleston Drive in the Riverwood Athletic subdivision.

Officials say the boy was with his parents Sunday morning as they worked to clean inside the nearby Child Development Center.

The child apparently wandered away and left the building. The parents noticed the child missing and first searched the interior of the large facility, then began searching outside where they found the child unresponsive in a fountain pool.

The father began CPR and EMS was called. The child was transported to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, but later died.

Clayton Police Detectives say the parents are Johnston County residents Gil Alonso and Erika Gozalez-Trejo. The investigation is ongoing.
