Almost 100 Guardsmen of the 171st Engineer Company, headquartered in St. Pauls and Fairbluff, NC arrived at Pope AFB after their deployment to Iraq, Monday. After a round of handshakes and salutes to NC National Guard leadership the soldiers bordered two commercial busses bound for St. Pauls where family members, friends and residents of St. Pauls were waiting for their return.

Tuesday a ceremony will be held at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 404 E. McLean St., in St. Pauls, N.C. 1:00 p.m.

The event is the chance for the military and civilian leadership along with the general public to formally welcome home the Soldiers of the 171st Engineers.

The 171st deployed to Iraq in July of 2007 and were charged with ensuring safe passage for US and coalition ground forces in Iraq by clearing routes, detecting explosives, conducting demolitions, investigating blasts and conducting sensitive site exploitation missions with ground penetrating radar.
