It happened Saturday afternoon.
Orange County dispatchers told Eyewitness News a deputy, who was in an area near Bill Poole Road and New Sharon Road in Rougemont, saw a suspicious man.
When the deputy got out of his car, the man ran into the woods. The deputy followed the man and the man reportedly fired shots at the deputy.
The deputy returned fire, killing the man.
