University leaders want to lower drinking age

Presidents of some of the country's best known schools, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State want lawmakers to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18.

They think current laws encourage students to binge drink on campus. The schools signed a pact called the Amethyst Initiative. It's designed to provoke debate about underage drinking.

M.A.D.D. --Mothers Against Drunk Driving-- is one of their biggest opponents.

Researchers say 17,000 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol related unintentional injuries like car crashes.
