Fundraiser held for injured bicyclists

WAKE COUNTY Justin Gailey and his girlfriend, Andrea Amezcua, were riding their bikes on Rolesville Road a month ago when a driver plowed into them.

The two were riding their bicycle when 50-year-old Jeffrey Pirce plowed into them, police believe he was drunk.

After the accident Gailey and Amezcua were left with a pile of medical bills. Sunday, a fundraiser was held at the Mez Resteraunt to honor the two cyclists.

"People have donated incredible items we have a soccer ball from Mia Hamm," friend Pam Nogueira said. "We have a 2008 jersey from Olympics gold medal team that won and an Eric Stall jersey."

Those are just some of the items on the auction block after friends organized to raise money for a good cause.

"Insurance has limits Andrea was in ICU for almost 2 weeks she has had four surgeries on her right leg three of those major," Nogueira said.

In addition to a back surgery and two months in a wheel chair for Amezcua, her boyfriend Gailey is also recovering.

He is wearing a brace that he will have to wear for I don't know how long, Nogueira said.

The Chapel Hill Resteraunt Group provided the resources they needed along with help from friends and donations.

"This was a spontaneous idea and it grew and grew and grew," Nogueira said.
