A Duke University College of Law senior lecturing fellow will replace Vice President-elect Joe Biden in the U.S. Senate. Ted Kaufman, who graduated Duke with an engineering degree in 1960, was appointed by Delaware Governor Ruth Minner.

Current North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole is the only alumnus in the current Senate, but she lost her reelection bid November 4.

Kaufman has worked on President-elect Barack Obama's transition team, and has served as Biden's chief of staff for 19 years.
