Easley: Too many people avoiding prison

CHARLOTTE, NC According to a Charlotte newspaper report published Wednesday, Gov. Mike Easley said people are on probation who should be behind bars.

Easley said his administration has asked for more money to build prisons and hire probation officers.

His comments came after reports that the state probation system has lost track of thousands of criminals since 2000.

A Raleigh newspaper also reported Easley's prison officials hadn't asked for additional employees and in 2005 increased probation officer workloads instead of asking for 135 new positions.
