The Shearon Harris pressurized water reactor is located about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh. Its current license would have expired in 2026. Now, it can run until 2046.
"After carefully reviewing the plant's safety system and specifications, the staff concluded there were no safety concerns that would preclude license renewal," the NRC said in a statement released to the media.
