Unemployed workers head back to school

RALEIGH North Carolina's community and technical colleges are experiencing a growing increase in students as the economic downturn is pinching the schools' budgets.

A spokeswoman for the state's community college system says enrollment was up in the fall at 49 of North Carolina's 58 community colleges.

Spokeswoman Peggy Beach told a local newspaper that community college enrollment rises 2 percent to 3 percent for every one percentage point increase in unemployment.

North Carolina's unemployment rate in November was 7.9 percent, which marked an increase from 7.1 percent in October and 4.7 percent in November 2007.
