Will Sanford dodge layoffs?

Caterpillar is laying off 20,000 workers nationwide. Big pharmaceuticals company Wyeth has been sold off. Both companies have a big presence in the Lee County community of Sanford, but local leaders don't appear to be worried.

Mayor Cornelia Oliver says she hears production could resume next month at the big Caterpillar plant in the city's industrial park. She also doesn't think there will large job cuts at Wyeth's facility.

"I think that everything is in such good shape around here right now. We are blessed to have a huge industrial base, so we are just not having the pain that alot of other people are suffering," she offered.

The mayor feels that both companies - which did lay off some workers late last year - have downsized about all they plan to do for now.
