Old Capitol gets repairs

RALEIGH Workers are fixing cracked concrete and making the area more accessible to people in wheelchairs.

Steps will be removed and sidewalks evened out.

The fences will require some pedestrians to change their course to walk through the square for the next few months. But the actual 1840 building itself won't be closed.

It houses Gov. Beverly Perdue's office, the old House and Senate chambers.

Perdue spokeswoman Chrissy Pearson said the repairs are being paid for with federal funds.
