Former band director makes first court appearance

DURHAM Jamal Butler is accused of having sex with two female students.

Eyewitness News was present for Butler's appearance, but he did not have any comments about the allegations.

Butler had held the position of band director at Southern High School in Durham for about two years. School officials will not confirm if Butler resigned from his job in January or if he was fired.

He faces two counts of sex offense with a student. Eyewintess News learned the allegation involved at least two students who are 16 years old or older.

During Tuesday's court appearance, Butler told the judge he has a lawyer and did not make any other comments regarding the charges.

It is also not known where Butler is working since he parted from Southern.
