The Humane Society has released the list of places where dogs confiscated from a Wayne County puppy mill will be available for adoption. Some will be available here in the Triangle area.

Here's the complete list:

  • SPCA of Wake County - website: http://www.spcawake.org
  • Humane Society of Charlotte - website: http://www.humanesocietyofcharlotte.org/
  • Washington Animal Rescue League
  • Montgomery County Humane Society
  • SPCA Tampa Bay
  • Dachshund Rescue of North America
  • Norfolk SPCA
  • Chihuahua Rescue and Transport
  • Pawfect Match Rescue
  • The Sterile Feral
  • Richmond SPCA

The 283 dogs were taken from Thornton Kennels in southern Wayne County last week after investigators found them living in filthy conditions.

The dogs -- mostly shih-tzus, chihuahuas and lhasa apsos -- have been treated for infections. Officials say two young puppies died the day of the raid. The rest are responding well to treatment.

Meanwhile, the Humane Society is asking for volunteer veterinarians to help out with the dogs. Volunteers can call Kelly Coladarci at (386) 624-3546.

More information about the case can be found on the Human Society website
