Cops want blue plate special

RALEIGH For the past two years, state license plates have been printed with red letters. The idea was to assist with the recall of old and worn plates.

But law enforcement personnel say they've found the old style blue plates easier to read at a distance, and they asked for the change.

None of the current red letter plates will be destroyed. Once the last of the red letter ones are issued between now and mid-October, printers will switch back to the traditional blue letters.
