Durham mayor headed to Saudi Arabia

DURHAM Bell and 10 other U.S. mayors will make the trip after getting an invite from the Saudi embassy in Washington. The group will represent the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The visit is scheduled for May 7-14.

A news release from the City of Durham says the trip is an "opportunity to learn first-hand about the Saudi economy, its educational system, culture, people, and government. The mayors will meet high-ranking Saudi business people and government officials as well as high school and university students. The delegation will also travel to one of the world’s largest oil fields, located in the Eastern Province."

The visit will be paid for by the Saudi government.

"This mission will make it possible to learn more about this important long-term ally of our country,” Bell said in a statement. "We appreciate this opportunity to gain insights into the government, culture, and people of this important Middle Eastern nation."
