Acquitted of murder, back in jail

RALEIGH Latrell Latham, 17, was booked into the Wake County Jail on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Latham went to trial in February for the 2008 murder of an elderly church deacon - but was found not guilty.

Richard Gus Brown, 74, was shot in October 2007 while getting his mail at his northeast Raleigh apartment complex.

According to testimony, Latham told another teen he committed the murder to gain rank in his gang.

After his acquittal, Latham's lawyer said prosecutors relied too much on the word of other gang members to make their case, and the judge told Latham to take advantage of a second chance at life.

Latham was previously convicted of robbery and could end up in jail for a year or more if found guilty of the latest charge.
