Man accused of dragging officer at checkpoint

A man is charged with dragging a Lee County deputy.Lester Williams, Jr. is facing two counts of attempted murder for allegedly dragging Lt. David Prevatte 20 to 30 feet Friday night.

Prevatte was not seriously injured. Authorities say Williams also nearly struck another deputy during the incident.

It happened during a checkpoint at the intersection of Beulah Brown Road and Minter School Road in Sanford. When officer Prevatte approached Williams' car, he allegedly smelled marijuana.

Authorities say Williams began to drive away as Prevatte reached into the vehicle to turn it off.
