Raleigh, Durham police getting more applications

RALEIGH It appears that the economy has boosted the number of people considering jobs in law enforcement. Raleigh and Durham police departments say they are getting more applications this year than in 2008.

According to numbers reported by a local newspaper, Raleigh has more than 1,000 applications for 52 positions this year. That compares with 500 applications this time last year.

Durham averages about 170 applications per year. It already has had 188 people test for 14 vacancies this year.

Yearly salaries for both cities' departments begin around $33,000.

Raleigh says it may stop taking applications because it has received so many.
