Body found in southeast Raleigh

RALEIGH It's a very large and diverse middle class neighborhood off Barwell Road, and residents tell Eyewitness News it's not the kind of place that police usually find a body.

"Shocked. Really shocked. It's right behind the park. And that's a pretty big concern for cause I have four children," offered Christi Battle.

Battle lives around the corner and stopped to talk with her neighbor Tuesday morning after the discovery. Both said their neighborhood is usually quiet except for the park, which has been becoming more and more of a problem lately - especially at night.

Now they're worried.

"I have a teenager and a small son that comes to the park. So I'm very concerned - want to know what happened," said Nicole Bordeaux.

Although the victim - lying in front of a sports car - wasn't discovered until daylight, young people in the neighborhood say they heard shots - maybe three or four - around 1:30 a.m.

Those young people didn't want to appear on camera saying they fear getting caught in the middle. When asked "getting caught in the middle of what?" they responded with one word: gangs.

On Tuesday evening, police identified the victim as 19-year-old Christopher Ryan Davis. His death has been ruled a homicide after police say he was shot to death.

The investigation of the case is continuing.
