It happened at Cheek Road and Highway 70 in Durham.
Officials say it began with a traffic stop on the Cheek Road exit.
According to the Highway Patrol, Trooper R.K. Clay shot 19-year-old Anthony Peaks several times when Peaks became physical during the traffic stop. Peaks is not believed to have life threatening injuries.
Witnesses said Peaks was loaded into an ambulance and he was conscious at the time.
The trooper was not injured.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to review what happened, which is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting.
