Sherita McNeil, 23, originally told police her 19-month-old son died accidentally. Family members found the child's body in the woman's home on Nov. 14, 2008. Garner police said he had been dead for about six weeks.
Last week an autopsy report cited the cause of death as "homicidal violence."
McNeil is charged with first-degree murder and concealing her son's death.
