Representatives from Amtrak told Eyewitness News the train stopped in Cary and was on its way to Raleigh en route to New York.
Authorities say the gates were down at the crossing when they think a driver went around the gate and was hit by the train.
Passengers on the train experienced about a two-hour delay.
Officials have not released any additional details.
