Soldier killed in Fayetteville collision

FAYETTEVILLE Fayetteville police officers responded to the scene in the 1400 block of Pamalee Drive around 4:48 a.m. on Friday.

According to police, a SUV struck a tree, but no other details were provided. Authorities are still investigating.

Two people were in the vehicle and one of them, 23-year-old Matthew B. Thomas, died at the scene. The second person was transported to Fear Valley Medical Center.

Police have not released the name of the second person.

Army officials say Thomas was a wheeled vehicle mechanic soldier from Lockhart, Texas.

He was part of the 82nd Airborne Division and has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a National Defense Service Ribbon.

Thomas joined the Army in June 2004 and completed basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. He earned his Army parachutist's badge at Fort Benning, Ga.

Thomas is survived by his daughter, Natalie, and his parents, Ronald and Catherine Thomas, of Lockhart.
