Child bitten by suspected rabid fox

DURHAM The girl was bitten on the leg while outside the Westminster School for Young Children on Old Chapel Hill Road.

The fox was rounded up by authorities and was taken into custody to be tested for rabies.

Animal Control said finding the animal responsible for the attack was crucial to the child being treated appropriately.

"In this situation the fox was seen jumping the fence and attacking the child and we must act appropriately on this," said an Animal Control official.

If the fox tests positive for rabies, the girl will undergo a series of rabies shots.
