Wake County schools officials have declined to explain what happened, citing personnel policies.
But the child's mother - Terri Byrd - says Baker slapped her autistic daughter across the face.
"I wanted to slap her. I wanted to slap her," said Byrd. "Disability, or no disability, you are not in the school system to slap children."
Eight-year-old Kylie has a severe disability and can only say a few words. Her mom admits she can get physical at times, but says it's no excuse for abuse.
"When a hand goes across the face, that's a slap. That's not discipline to me," she said.
Baker resigned in June after she was suspended with pay for "negative interaction with a student." Wake County Schools says she had no prior complaints against her since she was hired in 2002.
