Man arrested for ramming patrol car

DURHAM Police said the incident happened on Thursday night on Morehead Avenue.

They said an officer tried to pull over a gray 2006 Toyota Corolla around 8:15 p.m. after learning that the car was reported stolen.

The driver of the Toyota struck the right quarter panel of the patrol car and then drove away. The officer was not injured, but the cruiser was damaged.

Authorities chased the Toyota on Morehead Avenue to Chapel Hill Road. The chase ended when the Toyota crashed on Rainbow Way off James Street.

The driver -later identified as 38-year-old Monk- jumped out and ran. Officers searched the area for more than an hour, but did not find him.

On Saturday, Monk was arrested at the Carolina Duke motel on Guess Road after a CrimeStoppers tip lead police to him.

Monk is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony fleeing to elude arrest, hit-and-run, injury to property and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

He is also wanted on 19 additional felony charges including numerous vehicle break-in charges.

Monk is currently in the Durham County Jail under a $126,500 bond.
