The NC State student charged with larceny and damage to property for an artistic creation made out of traffic barrels faced a judge Tuesday. Joseph Carnevale, 21, was arrested June 10 after a police officer spotted his 'barrel monster' on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

Pictures of the monster quickly spread on the internet. There are even several pages on Facebook dedicated to supporting Carnevale.

The owner of the barrels, Guilford County-based Hamlett Associaties, told reporters that it didn't want to press charges and even wanted to display the monster at its offices.

In court Tuesday, a judge sentenced Carnevale to 50 hours community service. He's due back in court in October for a review of his compliance.

If he completes the community service, the charges will be dropped.
