Local soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Roxboro family is grieving after their son was killed in a roadside blast in Afghanistan.A military spokesman said three American troops were killed in different blasts in southern Afghanistan on Saturday.

Further details surrounding the deaths have not been released.

Pfc. Richard Jones' mother told Eyewitness News her son was one of the casualties. She said she spoke with him last week and he told her he loved her.

His mother said he was caring, loving and always wanted to join the military.

Jones was on the wrestling team at Person High School for four years, before he graduated in 2006.

He worked as a diesel mechanic after high school before joining the Army in October 2008.

Jones will have a military funeral at Providence Baptist Church, but no date has been set.
